Friday November 13th appeared to be our lucky day. We managed to set the new domino world record by 4.491.863 toppled dominoes in one chain reaction during the thrilling TV show Domino Day 2009. The Start of this year’s edition was unique. No famous celebrity this time but a domino fan who became a champion at the Mr.Domino Open Championships Domino Building. As a price he got the opportunity to start Domino Day 2009. To do this he had to walk in a wheel rolling a little earth ball towards the first domino.
With this 11th edition we saw a new and restyled show in which the dominoes toppled in flows. These seven flows showed the viewer "The World in Domino". With a continuous movement last year's record of 4.345.027 dominoes was beaten with lots of excitement. 89 Builders set up 4,800,000 dominoes. Out of four exciting Builders Challenges only one succeeded, it was nerve wrecking.
During the first Builders Challenge two persons had to build a domino line on sand, but the line toppled to early. The second Challenge showed how much pressure is on. They had to set up dominoes on little swings hanging in the air. One of the two builders was so nervous she couldn’t hold her hands still. During the third challenge they had to set up dominoes under water. But this was also effortless. Only the fourth; the fire challenge succeeded. Beside these disappointments there were also some serious domino accidents in the rally which interfered with the timing of the show. Because of this some projects partly fell out of site for the cameras.
After the great success of last year, it was a great challenge topping that. However, the great feeling from last year made the team even more motivated to achieve that success again. The viewing numbers of this year’s edition are even more incredible. We are proud to share with you the few viewing facts that are already available. For Holland 2.9 million viewers watch our show and in Germany even 5,9 million viewers. Domino Day scores substantially above the average channel rations in all countries over the years. The show was broadcasted prime time amongst others in: The Netherlands, Germany, Russia, Greece, Belgium, Poland, Austria, Hungary, Croatia, Slovakia, and England.
Domino Day is produced in co-operation with and by order of: Endemol Nederland B.V., RTL Television GmbH and SBS6 Television.
